Im only 5 hours in and was excited to get new armor to find out that it doesn't change character appearence. That was dissapointing. This is my first JRPG, and i am enjoying it so far. The hardest part was getting past some of the Japanese style, like the hi-pitch screaming purple haired girl, and trying to role play a character that looks like a 10 year old/barbie doll.
